Staying Warm While Ice fishing By Woolly Mammoth Woolen Company

Ice fishing dates back hundreds of years and was originally used as a means of survival. Spears were used to stab fish that swam near the holes.  Although the technology and equipment for ice fishing have changed over the years, there is one characteristic that has never changed – the cold!

 100% merino wool blankets

Aside from that hot toddy, here are our top 4 items that will keep you warm as you hover over that fishing hole praying for that line to drop.

Proper Fitting Clothing
Keep those extremities warm with properly fitting boots, gloves, jacket, and hat.  If you do not have an enclosed shelter, you may consider full-on ski-mask and wind-blocking snow pants as well.  Dress in layers and keep your core warm.

Pop Up Tent
On the cold, windy days on the lake be prepared by bringing a one-person popup tent.  This tiny shelter can be a godsend by blocking the blistering wind but also absorbing and retaining heat from the sun.

Compact Heater
For a cheap price, you can find small and portable propane heater that pump out long-lasting heat while you are fishing. Most heaters will say how much space the heater is designed to fill.  These heaters are a great addition to the popup tent.

Wool Blankets

Wool is the ultimate fiber to keep you warm all winter long.  Our warm wool blankets have natural moisture and temperature regulating properties to keep you comfortable and dry.  Our navy blue wool blanket and gray wool blankets have been fan favorites for ice fishers.  Our sheep wool blankets are made from virgin merino wool, never recycled wool, so it will keep its amazing natural properties for many years. Our blankets are sixty-six inches by ninety inches . . . plenty of room to bundle up while waiting for that bobber to go down!

Bed Display
A beautiful and well-woven Yellow Wool Blanket adds a classic touch to the end of a bed. It also serves as an easy-to-grab extra layer during the night. We favor bed comforters that are neutral colored so we can add a “pop” of color with the wool. A warm wool blanket adds such a welcoming touch.
 Red Plaid Wool Blanket
Ladder Display
These are great for the living room or guest bedroom. They serve as a beautiful way to display various wool  blankets and adds a sense of texture to a space. Add a variety of designs including Black And White Wool Blanket and Red Plaid Wool Blanket.
Under the Fitted Bedsheet
You read that right. Putting a quality wool blanket under the fitted bed sheet is a great way to add insulation. Perfect for those chilly winter nights in the cabin. Just place the wool blanket in between the mattress pad and the fitted sheet and experience an extra cozy slumber. We use a thick cream colored wool blanket to blend in with our ivory sheets.
In the Car
Not just for emergency purposes. But great for an impromptu pullover to look at the moon, or using as a stadium blanket for the local football game. We never leave home without our trust Gray Wool Blankets.
On the Front Porch
Porch swings and wool blankets stick together like glue. Our wool blanket company’s Stargazer gray and 100 Percent Wool Blanket was named for this purpose. Wrap up and sway the night away.

And on that note…time to take a snooze.

Hiking Angel’s Landing in Zion National Park By: Woolly Mammoth Woolen Company

Zion, you have our heart.  It was during late August when we arrived at Zion National Park in Southwest Utah, about a two and half hour drive from Las Vegas. Upon entering the park on a late afternoon, we were greeted by the friendliest park ranger in America who proceeded to give us a park map and provide us with local weather conditions for the next few days.  She pointed us in the general direction of our campsite where we went to set up shop for the next few days.  After pitching the tent, laying out our wool camping blanketsBlack And White Wool Blanket and cooking hot dogs and burgers over the open flame of the fire pit, we decided to call it a night in order to be well rested for the challenge that lay ahead: Angel’s Landing.

Red Plaid Wool Blanket

Angel’s Landing is a very strenuous 5-mile hike with steep switch backs and deathly steep drop-offs in certain areas. We woke up extra early in order to catch the first bus to the trail head. The hike begins in a scenic, cool canyon.  It’s best to be prepared with multiple layers if you hit the trail early. The trail then begins to gain elevation through a series of switchbacks called  “Walter’s Wiggle.”  These switchbacks will have your glutes burning, but the views are amazing.  Once you reached the top of Walter’s Wiggles you’ll follow the narrow ridgeline the rest of the way.  The trail narrows at one point to about two feet wide in one section but thankfully the bolted in chain links to guide you to the peak.  It’s grueling and empowering effort to make it to the peak, but once you reach the top you’ll understand why it’s called Angel’s Landing.

After soaking in the views and recouping our energy, we headed back to our campsite where we shared stories around the campfire and wrapped up in our quality wool blankets as we relaxed under the stars… Another carefree summer day in Zion.

Hiking with Dogs Woolly Mammoth Woolen Company, Warm Wool Blankets

We love dogs. Our dogs are constant companions on the trails. Together, we have experienced some of our greatest adventures in life. We’ve put together our top 5 tips to consider when bringing your furry friend out into the wilderness with you.

Trail Research
Make sure to research which trails are appropriate for bringing dogs. Just because a trail is labeled as “dog friendly” doesn’t mean you can let your dog off the leash. Respect your fellow hikers and keep Fido close to you at all times.

Water
Seems obvious, but don’t forget to pack water for your dog. We have a wonderful canine backpack that allows our dog to carry his own water. We pack a small collapsible dog bowl. It’s win-win for everyone.

Safety
When camping with your dog, make sure they stay close to the campsite. Put a light-up collar on them and if you need to, tie them up. It’s safer for the dogs and it’s safer for other unsuspecting campers who could be alarmed if an unleashed animal comes wandering into their campsite.

Sleep
Be sure to pack a roll up foam pad or a durable wool blanket & wool blankets for sale for your dog to cozy up with at night. Even dogs get cold, too! Our dog has his favorite gray wool blankets & heavy wool blanket that has seen better days!.

 Explorer Collection Wool Blankets

First Aid
Let’s hope you don’t need it, but pack it just in case. The trails can be tough on paws. Be sure to check their feet after hiking.

Be sure to train your dogs for big hikes. Start out with daily walks, then graduate to more strenuous hikes. We had our dog first practice hiking with his empty backpack. As he got older, we added more weight to help build stamina. It’s a perfect addition to our hiking gear collection. He carries his stuff, and we carry ours!

Happy trails, friends.

 Rugged Tan Wool Blanket

Baked French Toast

Ingredients

24-inch French baguette
6 large free range eggs
3 cups organic whole milk
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup packed organic brown sugar
1 cup organic pecans
1/4 cup plus 1 teaspoon unsalted butter
1/4 teaspoon Himalayan salt
Sliced bananas (or substitute with 2 cups of organic blueberries)

Preparation

Butter a 13 x 9-inch baking dish. Cut twenty 1-inch slices from baguette and arrange in one layer in baking dish. In a large bowl whisk together eggs, milk, nutmeg, vanilla, and 3/4 cup brown sugar and pour evenly over bread. Chill mixture, covered, until all liquid is absorbed by bread, at least 8 hours, and up to 1 day.

Preheat oven to 350°F.

In a shallow baking pan spread pecans evenly and toast in middle of oven until fragrant, about 8 minutes. Toss pecans in pan with 1 teaspoon butter and salt.

Increase temperature to 400°F.

Sprinkle pecans and blueberries evenly over bread mixture. Cut 1/2 stick butter into pieces and in a small saucepan heat with remaining 1/4 cup brown sugar, stirring, until butter is melted. Drizzle butter mixture over bread and bake mixture 20 minutes, or until any liquid from blueberries is bubbling.

Serve French toast with pure maple syrup.
