Hiking with Dogs Woolly Mammoth Woolen Company, Warm Wool Blankets

We love dogs. Our dogs are constant companions on the trails. Together, we have experienced some of our greatest adventures in life. We’ve put together our top 5 tips to consider when bringing your furry friend out into the wilderness with you.

Trail Research
Make sure to research which trails are appropriate for bringing dogs. Just because a trail is labeled as “dog friendly” doesn’t mean you can let your dog off the leash. Respect your fellow hikers and keep Fido close to you at all times.

Water
Seems obvious, but don’t forget to pack water for your dog. We have a wonderful canine backpack that allows our dog to carry his own water. We pack a small collapsible dog bowl. It’s win-win for everyone.

Safety
When camping with your dog, make sure they stay close to the campsite. Put a light-up collar on them and if you need to, tie them up. It’s safer for the dogs and it’s safer for other unsuspecting campers who could be alarmed if an unleashed animal comes wandering into their campsite.

Sleep
Be sure to pack a roll up foam pad or a durable wool blanket & wool blankets for sale for your dog to cozy up with at night. Even dogs get cold, too! Our dog has his favorite gray wool blankets & heavy wool blanket that has seen better days!.

First Aid
Let’s hope you don’t need it, but pack it just in case. The trails can be tough on paws. Be sure to check their feet after hiking.

Be sure to train your dogs for big hikes. Start out with daily walks, then graduate to more strenuous hikes. We had our dog first practice hiking with his empty backpack. As he got older, we added more weight to help build stamina. It’s a perfect addition to our hiking gear collection. He carries his stuff, and we carry ours!

Happy trails, friends.
